Solas. Solas is probably the mage-iest mage you have available out of all of the Dragon Age Inquisition companions. Ultimately, Knight Enchanter is probably the best mage specialty, but the companion AI does an abysmal job at handling its more complex mechanics. Rift Mages, like Solas, on the other hand, do just fine under AI control.
Obviously this is pretty much comes down to what specialization they have. The chars are in no order in their rows, meaning that I don't necessarily think Dorian is better than Iron Bull etc, just a general placement. S Tier - Sera, Vivienne. A Tier - Blackwall, Cole, Solas. B Tier - Dorian, Iron Bull, Cassandra. To illustrate what I mean, tier 4 Staffs max out at 77 base damage whereas a tier 4 Two-handed weapon has 256 base damage (and because The Prismatic great-axe doubles all hit damage it's effective Base damage is 512!!!!!) so warriors are starting with almost 3.33 times (or 6.65 times if using the Prismatic Great-axe)base damage over a mage.
Templar is your best bet to maximize the potential damage from a Sword and Shield warrior. The templar has easily the highest damage combo in the form of Wrath of Heaven + Spell Purge that still does respectable damage (2/3 of any normal enemy on nightmare) with Sword and Shield. If you do end up going for this make sure to have a second Fx25Gn.
